  1. RIP brother. Sincerest condolences to the Valhalla crews. Just the worst, I’m so sorry.
  2. There’s a lot of horrible owner/operators in Canada. Sadly they are the way into the seat more often than not. They get the scraps of work that go to the lowest bidder, yet you get experience and hours. Bush companies trying to be something they will never be, because of who the owner/operators are, culturally ****** human beings! The good companies are few and far in between. You won’t be picky starting out, pretty hard to be! That being said, I love my job and what I do for a living. I wouldn’t trade any of it to go back and do something else. Work/home life balance is hard to find, some never find it in this industry unfortunately. This industry will always challenge you, if you want it. Some days are filled with incredibly rewarding memories and experiences, things you would never get “staying at home”. It’s all up to what make you happy and feeling fulfilled. Do what’s best for you and your loved ones. Life’s short, you gotta be happy!
  3. So there I was watching a storm outside from the comfort of inside the nice warm hangar. I had told my wife I wasn’t flying till the afternoon, it was forecasted to be calm by said time. The boss comes in and human factors me in a despicable fashion to push out and head to site. He was required to be apart of the days flight for sign off purposes for our client. We go flying and dramatically end up upside down in a forest. Jet fuel pouring on me with an engine still running kind of thing, leg trapped and can’t get it out. Ughhh I still relieve that day while in the shower, every single shower I’ve taken since. Life has consequences beyond our wildest imaginations sometimes. When 💩 hits the fan it happens fast. Take all the training you receive with dedication and 100% effort. Wear your shoulder harness and helmet for every single flight. Stand up for yourself when you have a bad gut feeling. It’s a fine line between assertive and aggressive but crossing that line is okay sometimes if you feel it’s right. I love what I do and I don’t think I’d be any happier doing anything else for a living. What a job it is and I love the home life it affords you and your family (pool pilot not quite the same as a base guy)! thanks for listening.
  4. Happy to hear the driver is okay! Good job!!!
  5. Two pax in a 212 works for me. One in each penalty box!🤣 If I need to drive from BC to Ontario to feed my children then so be it. Girls gotta eat!
  6. The equipment usually used by the PPL is called a wishbone which attaches to the dorsal D on their harness. It either has a breakaway rating of 210lbs or 300lbs depending on if the client has purchased the aluminum or stainless steel options. It has two ends, one coloured red and the other grey. The red side always gets attached to the helicopter and the grey to the tower. If there is a hiccup halfway through the transfer and both ends attached, to the heli and the tower, the red will break away with enough said force by releasing the slide pin stitched into the wishbone. Both lanyards are approximately 2 1/2 feet long, so the PPL would be then pulled tight in opposite directions then likely launched back to the tower with force once the red breaks away. All round a bad situation but 99.9% survivable. I wouldn't say it is the safest quickest method to put a guy/gal on a tower with the least amount of exposure time but when done with two individuals with experience it is very efficient especially with a 500. It passes my personal risk assessment with competant and trained PPL's, that being said it is not my preferred method of doing it. Class D, dual hook and CAT A is by far the safest method just not the most economical preferred method for the clients. The safety measures put in place for the lineman did its job and the individual will be going home to his/her loved ones at the end of the day.
  7. Man charged in N.W.T. pilot's film-shoot death Click here!
  8. CBC Link Please people be safe out there this year. I don't mean to speculate on what happened based on the reporting of CBC, but from the sounds of it, someone might be in serious trouble. Safe skies and steady hands out there.
  9. Awesome story FF! Poor kid is doomed from the beginning just as you were!!! Congratulations once again!
  10. Seen a commercial on Discovery Channel advertising that the Heli-Loggers series will begin Friday @ 6pm mountain time. Also seen that the Extreme Loggers "Helicopter Logging" episode will be on Saturday, 6pm again.
  11. Congrats Sling!!! Flip-Flops for the showers Towel Single sized bed sheet, good sleeping bag and pillow Good knife, flashlight, and leatherman Warm boots and longjohns Books and movies Extra work gloves And a camera so you can keep us updated with some photos from the field! The most important I would say though, is staying positive with a good attitude! Some times being in a drill camp for long periods of time with cranky and negative drillers will really wear you down, they all don't enjoy what they do for a living. Their isn't always a way to keep in good contact with who you care about most back home. Don't let it get to you and keep positive, there's always a light at the end of the tunnel! Take care and be safe!
  12. CARS, Part IV - Personnel Licensing and Training There's a good a table in section 404.04 that should explain it for you. Every pilot should know how to find all information they need with CARs! Hope this helps.
  13. N.W.T premier, cabinet survive no-confidence motion All I know is that I'm relieved! Looks like the loan should go through...
