  1. Get an accountant, it’s not worth the headache from cra if you make an error
  2. It has up until the last few years, now there’s no one left 😂
  3. Have they ever asked you to stay in longer or change your schedule last minute?
  4. They’ve always been higher. There’s more variety, more support, better everything. I do see guys catching up with interest at least these days in Canada but the rates aren’t worth it for what’s left. The only thing worth doing in Canada is forestry I think.
  5. In your particular scenario here there wasn’t an option of taking more time in your shift to get to and from this job? As you’ve clearly indicated that area can be problematic for weather, I’m just curious why that couldn’t be accounted and planned for within your scheduled shift?
  6. That’s happened to me, so much I wish i could have told my younger self 😂
  7. Work hard, be true to your word and yourself. Get everything in writing when offers or promises are made (follow up emails summarizing said promises and agreements). If they don’t acknowledge these there is more going on behind the scenes. This is an industry of *** kissing, back stabbing and nepotism/favouritism. If you’re a contractor I’d definitely be seeing a solicitor for a contract agreement drafted with your expectations and signed in blood before you go to work. These are things I did earlier on in my career and I still have a diploma wall from hard knocks. There’s a lot of good advice in here, bottom line, take steps to protect yourself!
  8. It’s horrible, I his fire season is going to be a big one too I think.
  9. That is predictable geographical circumstance which can easily be managed and prepared for with more crew and resources on site. There should be a clause in the vendor contract where in the remote chance these situations were to occur, a heavy stipend, guaranteed bonus’/raises should apply to all crew/employees involved as well as extended leave (days off) to mitigate any and all damages accrued to said personnel and then some. I agree “#### happens sometimes”, but a simple meteorological event that hinders and inconveniences everyone on site involved due to the aforementioned is nothing short of gross negligence of the highest order. I would not work for ANY employer that sets crew up for failure and expect them to pick up the pieces uncompensated like that!
  10. That’s typical in any government branch lol
  11. This is exactly why I left Canadas market and took my skillset outside Canada where it’s remunerated appropriately. If you want a constant metric for what Canada pays take a similar position in the states and divide it in half. I agree wholeheartedly that the industry has done it to itself. It just takes one big player that uses their assets primarily for crafty accounting to set the bar (and rates) so low. I don’t usually come on vertical much anymore because I of the dismal reminder of how dogsh1t this industry has become. Best of luck to anyone still making a go at it here, I wish things were better for everyone.
