Layoffs: Domestic Vs. Foreign Pilots

Does Canadian labour law protect Canadian-born pilots from being layed off before foreign pilots with work visas at the same company? Additionally, is anyone aware of Canadian pilots that have been layed off at a company that is still employeing foreign pilots? Any thoughts to add on the topic?

HELLO!!

Where have you been?? You bet there are laws that stop foriegn pilots from taking jobs that could otherwise be filled by a Canadian. There are a few companies in Alberta that are doing this right now, in BC too, and Ontario and Quebec. These companies are breaking the law, it's been going on for years. They will claim that there is no experienced pilots out there but there are many, many!! The companies may not want to hire these perosns for other reasons, that may also be in violation of the labour code. So what can be done.

1. Contact Citizenship and Immigration Canada

2. Contact HRDC

3. Talk to your MP.

The good news is that CIC and HRDC are now getting wise to this after some serious and persitant efforts by some folks that have just had enough! But givem a call. I would suggest a letter to the Deputy Minsiter of both Ministries. Just look up GEDS on google and there you will find the names of many persons who you can call and speak with.

Remember the company can hire a foreign pilot, and he can only work for that company, he cannot go elsewhere if he is not happy with wages, conditions of employment ect. The Canadian pilot has mobility and this works aginst the interestest of the corporate bottom line.

Best of luck

Little off topic. How many dead horses can a skycrane lift?

Okay lets see.......an average horse weighs approx. 600 lbs + an average male flogging said horses (200lbs) + the whips at 2.5 lbs each comes out two around 24.9 (sets) of dead horses being flogged...
