Mark Okay fair comment, one would think though if the area is big enough to carve out a sos in the snow and big enough to see it from the air it would be large enough to land shut down listen have a good look, what would that take .4 ? A person died because the sos was not taken for what it suppose to mean to those it's meant to attract PILOTS, maybe pilots have to be trained for that too.... good grief, seems like common sense is not so common
Rotorhead
http://ca.news.yahoo.com/s/capress/090225/...l/tragic_rescue Truly a tragedy and another example of where the headlines that attract attention have the word helicopter involved. Shame on the media, again...

Do you fly? Do you know what the mountains are like in the Golden area? It's a tragedy - let's see how it settles out when all the info comes out... Spend some time is steep narrow valley with avalanche paths in the Purcells, and you'd understand a bit more. No you can't land, No you can't shut down. ( can you say TOE-IN on the "O" of SOS ??) The rescue pilot had a very difficult time getting a small aircraft anywhere near them in a safe location, the reporting party was flying a FULLY LOADED 205 ( read 48' of blades).
