Recommended Posts

I am interested in what are essentails (electronics) for setting up a good police air unit. I know alot of big bucks can get wasted and I'm currious what is needed and what never gets used.

Cheers

It really depends on what kind of police unit you'll be. Some do a lot more search and rescue ops than night patrol duties and the equipment regularly used is much different.

An excellent resource for current or perspective police units is ALEA - the Airborne Law Enforcement Association. (www.alea.org) You have to become a member to get the goodies, but they have endless resources including sample unit manuals and new unit start up assistance.

Communication is key. Having radios to be able to talk with any regional ground unit is a must. Standard items would need to include a searchlight and infrared camera and recording devices. Gps nav system with street overlay on camera is tops and the ablility to xmit live feed to other units or a base are just for starters. It all depends on size of a/c and your budget. Also the needs of the law enforcement agency in question need to be met as their tastes and technology is ever changing.

Have a nice day.

I agree it depends on your budget both of money and space in the ship. Also what's the mission? Metro stuff or covering a more rural area. A basic set up would include some tactical radio set up (NAT, Technisonics..) searchlight

I'd agree with a moving map system integrated with a, IR and DV camera and recording gear. Works great for evidence and even better for submitting video to the news to justify the program.

NVG's, and a proper instrument panel that's certified for goggles.

What I've seen is usually overkill on the gadgets, SATCOM with text messaging, Rappelling kits, (when nobody repels), litter kits that weigh 500 pounds, LOJACK, loudspeakers nobody on the ground can understand (but they have a siren...just in case you get into a pursuit?)

As for down link, unless you can transmit to a every patrol car, the gear is always someplace else and the call is over when the van gets there that has the receiver, skip it.

But thru the process you'll get 126 free coffee cups and 372 ball caps!!

Thanks for all the info and oppinions. Keep em comming. I guesse my next question to ask is what is the best aircraft for the job. I gueses it would be a more multi role unit SAR ect. I seems like alot of angencies are going towards the EC120. I dont understand why. Other than all the cargo space it seems very over priced and under powered. What have you guys and gals used in the past? Also none of you mentioned anything from Dillon Areo  ha ha.

sorry had to put that in.

cheers

Reason is it is super quiet, you should go on the Eurocopter site and get the infos about it.

Not saying you should buy that one.

You've got it backwards - identify the missions first, then look at what aircraft will fit the requirements. Too many agencies do it backwards and then can't understand why they can only go 1/2 fuel with two people on board. Don't trust what the Manufacturers tell you, there job is to sell them and make parts for them. Your best source of real information is the operators.

Part of the reason so many agencies are going to the EC120 (especially here in the US) is because it is air conditioned and quieter than a 206.

Give me the old 5 hondo though...
