MapleLeafs
Was wondering if anything every came from the Expats receiving" Work Permits in Canada" topic in the past? Who did the readers contact, write or voice their disagreement of expats obtaining pilot jobs in Canada and/or with Canadian operators? Seems like the trend is re-occurring!! RotorPoler
You are surprised?? Take the time to do a background check on the Director General of Civil Avaiation here in Canada. His name is Martin J. Eley. He's a freakin Brit! The government won't hire Canadians why should the operators?? Wlecome to canada where IF you are a Canadian, get the fugg in the back of the bus!! Transport Canada Leadership Merlin Pruess, long-time director general of Civil Aviation for Transport Canada, recently retired, and Martin J. Eley was selected as his replacement. Eley previously was director of the Aircraft Certification Branch for Transport Canada. Eley graduated from Imperial College, London, in 1977, with a bachelor’s degree in aeronautical engineering. He completed his undergraduate apprenticeship with the British Aerospace. Eley spent the next five years working on the development of composite primary structures for the Tornado and Jaguar aircraft at British Aerospace. In 1982, Eley joined the Aircraft Certification Branch of Transport Canada as a structures certification engineer, working on the CL-601 and DHC-8 aircraft. From 1985 to 1994, he worked as an engineering program manager responsible for the Canadair/Bombardier products, including the CL-601-3A, CL-215T and the regional jet. In 1994, he returned to structures as the section manager. In April 1998, Eley was acting chief of the engineering division; he was appointed to this position in February 1999. In August 2001, he was appointed to director of the Aircraft Certification Branch. During this time, he was heavily involved in the development of Civil Aviation regulations, standards and advisory material. Eley is registered as a professional engineer in Ontario, and he is an associate fellow of the Canadian Aeronautics and Space Institute So I took your advice and did a quick Google. Classy bit of misdirection there. Mr Eley's been with Transport Canada since the early 80's, I'm pretty sure he's not in Canada on a work permit - which is what the original rant was about. What was your point, Sir? You guys rock. No, really, you do. Back to work folks, there`s nothing to see here...
Guest Bullet Remington
RP; Good for you. You could have gotten the same information from the TCCA web site. And you are completely missing the point! Do you think Eley had a work visa when he applied for the Structural Engineer in 1982? Do you honestly believe that there were/are no well qualified and available CANADIAN Structure Engineers that would have loved to have that job? When he came here in 1982 he came here FROM the UK as a British citizen not a Canadian with no right to work here, so just how do you explain how he got the right to work here?? The point is, ex-pats are and have been coming in to Canada and /or being brought into Canada, to take jobs where there ARE and/or were qualified citizens who could have filled these positions. AND the point is this practice has been going on for some time and is /has been done by the government of Canada and by the very folks we expect to conduct and legislate the aviation business and the practices thereof. So, IF people are going to get on here and complain about the shortage of jobs and the fact that there are operators who STILL insist that there are no qualified Canadians to fill the opening they need filed, those jobs are going to be filled by Ex -pats. And the recomendations to approve the acceptance into canada will be made by Ex - Pats that have been brought in by the government. Nothing to see here? OK then i expect NOT top see another post on this site by a pilot complaining about an Ex-pat taking jobs away from Canadians. you honestly think its as easy to go the opposite route? try applying for some of the jobs advertised on Aviationjobs .com, flightjobs.com totaljobs.com and some of the placement agencies like betts, Line Up aviation , etc. The FIRST question they will ask you, is are you entitled to work in the EU, Austrailia, etc. When you say no, the interview is terminated right there and now. During the last brewhaaha on this site, myself and a pilot that I worked with sat down and decided to apply for a bunch of the diffferent jobs advertised, where our qualifications meet the qualifications described and listed for the vacancy advertised. I applied for nine different LAME/ Mechanic jobs, he applied for 14 pilot jobs.. The EU jobs we got shut down tighter then a lock-down in a maximum security penititionary! In my case, in 5 of those jobs, I didn't even get to discuss my qualifications - the FIRST question asked was; "Do you have the right to live and work in the EU. When I answered no. everything stopped right there! We were both offered jobs in the Middle East. And that's the way it should be here. However, don't expect an ex-pat that is here and in a position to change the system and it's methodology when they are in the position they are now in because of that very system. Its been going on for years folks, don't ecpect your rights to be looked after by anybody but yourself. There is a good possiblity though that everybody will be crying like a baby in a number of years down the road, when you walk into an operator and you can't understand the accent of the Chief driver / Ops manager or Chief Wrench bender. Yeah, those that have jobs back to work - for now. Put the blinders on, don't look at the big picture, and shut-up and put up!! Mis-direction? None there, none at all! The facts are essentially all listed on the TCCA board.
