It is with great sadness that I pass along this information. Wray Palmer passed away this last Sunday of cardiac complications. He had been battling cancer as well. I don't have details of any services, but will post them here when I find out.

I've had the pleasure of knowing Wray for over 30 years, having first met him when I was a teeny weeny little apprentice. We would cross paths occaisionally throughout our careers. He was a straight up dude and called 'em as he seen 'em. I really enjoyed working with him and just having a BS session over coffee. He is survived by a large family which I know he was extremely close to.

 

I'm not sure of who all Wray worked for and perhaps someone could fill in here. I know he worked for Highland and Delta Helicopters.

 

My sincere condolences to all the family.

Wallace Wray Palmer

 

Wray was born on November 11, 1938 in Rossburn Manitoba to Clair and Aleda. After a brief illness he passed away on July 11, 2010 at the age of 71 in Edmonton, Alberta. He will be forever missed and lovingly remembered by Deanna his wife of 52 years and his children Garry and Kathy, Sandra and Dwayne, Shelley, Barb, Ron and Rhonda, Michelle and Rob. Grandchildren Chris and Lindsey, Brad and Kristin, Derrick and Beth, Raelene, Avery, Maddy, Chase and Daine and great grandchildren Cohen and Grayson.

 

He was predeceased by his parents Clair and Aleda and his sister Elizabeth.

 

Wray served 23 years in the RCAF then continued his career as an engineer with Highland and Delta Helicopters.

A committed family man he never hesitated to travel across town or for hundreds of miles to be with his children and grandchildren. He could always be counted on for advice, encouragement or a helping hand.

A huge sports fan, Wray was actively involved in hockey, baseball, curling, hunting, fishing and stock car racing participating as a player, coach and referee.

 

Special thanks to the staff at the Mazankowski, U of A and the Cross Cancer.

 

Funeral services will be held on Friday July 16, 2010 at 11:00 am at the St. Albert Catholic Church officiated by Father Andrzej Stendzina.

 

In lieu of other tributes, donations can be made to the Cross Cancer Institute or the Mazankowski Alberta Heart Institute.

Wray came to Lac La Biche and got our rotors turning on more than one occasion. Sorry I missed the summer when he and the missus had their trailer parked next to the hangar.

 

Condolences to Wray's family and friends. He was a fine person.

Also worked with Wray, spent five years with Highland and got to see Wray quite often. Had quite the collection of Stuff in the hanger at Edson if I do recall. Sadly time goes by and we lose touch with great people that we have worked with in this industry. Last time I talked to him was 97.

Wray will be greatly missed. He was one one the good engineers that was more than willing to teach a new apprentice a thing or two. And when he was ready to leave the industry more than willing to part with his special tools. I guess that was his way of ensuring he wouldn't return to the job.

I defiantly have fond memories of Wray. And never did figure out where his nickname came from.

I wasn't sure what to say when I saw the first post a week ago.

 

Wray was a pretty special individual, and I will miss him dearly.
