Canadian chopper catches fire after 'hard landing'

A Canadian Chinook helicopter caught fire after making what military officials are calling a hard landing in Afghanistan.

 

The CH-147 helicopter came down in Panjwaii district, about 20 km southwest of Kandahar City, at about 2 p.m. local time Thursday, a Department of National Defence spokesman said.

 

Five crew members and five passengers were recovered, the International Security Assistance Force in Afghanistan said in a release.

 

Some of the personnel on board suffered minor injuries, according to DND.

 

The causes of the hard landing and fire are under investigation.

Just saw a quick clip on tv saying that a canadian forces chinook went down in Afghanistan. 20 or so onboard and the taliban is claiming that they shot it down. Anyone have any more info?

Good News. National post is reporting the helicopter just had a hard landing. No one killed, eight injured. Hope all that are injured get well soon.

Everybody got off safely, a few cuts and scrapes. Awesome work by the crew to put her down safely! No preliminary information released yet.

 

Airframe burned to the ground and remnants were recovered to Kandahar Air Field.

 

More to follow as the info is officially released.

Chinook brought down by small arms fire: officials

KANDAHAR, Afghanistan — The Canadian Forces has confirmed that a Chinook helicopter that was forced to make an emergency landing Thursday was brought down by small arms fire.

 

The helicopter made a hard landing and immediately burst into flames 20 km southwest of Kandahar city.

 

Eight of the 21 people aboard the Canadian CH-147 Chinook suffered minor injuries.

 

Brig.-Gen. Jonathan Vance, the commander of Task Force Kandahar, said small arms fire struck the aircraft, igniting a fire that forced the aircraft to land and eventually destroyed it.

 

Canada now has five Chinook helicopters remaining in its Afghanistan fleet.
