I have the 296 and I'm not upgrading, main reson is battery life, the 296 can last 15 hours on one charge (if you dim the screen) and you can also carry a spare battery, whereas the Aera only lasts 5 hours. True you can connect both to the aircraft power supply but as a heli pilot I sometimes fly aircrafts that don't have a power hookup or their power connector is non standard.

Actually, I just used an Aera 500 Garmin for my last tour and I like it more than the 296 now.   At first, it's a bit annoying because you think it takes more button pushing. But once I realized th

I only played with an Aera for a bit. It seems to only go down to 0.1 NM where as the 296 goes right down to the nearest foot. So it depends on what you're doing with it. We're slinging loads into spe

The Aera's have their place with the longer flights but when you're at your next waypoint every 30 seconds, you can't beat the simplicity and speed of the 296's. The Aera just won't do it. Try going

I was freaking out because my 296 started eating through batteries... didn't notice still I started flying machines without a plug-in. It will only charge partially overnight, say "Charging Complete" but the battery bar is only half full or less, and the life remaining only a few hours. Kept me pretty nervous until I decided to fully drain the batteries one night, the timer reached zero and the gps stayed on for several hours after... so clearly it's just confused. Still don't like this behaviour though...
