What we need is more sensationalism to get the Canadian public angry about the lack of safety oversight that Transport is trying to push at this time. They say they don't have enough funds to do oversight of all of the aviation companies that work in Canada when their real job should be to convince the government to increase funds. If they can't do that they should resign and let someone who gives a **** about safety take over. Anyone who knows the industry knows that there are aviation companies who operate on the edge and beyond of the safety rules and with no external oversight people will die unnecesarily. Human nature and greed guarantees that will occur.

In the fairy tale land of some higher up bureaucrat or politician SMS might work but in the real world we all know that SMS won't work. I had to laugh at the segment in the report where the obviously more senior pilot with the silver hair was talking about an incident (i think they felt they had taxied too fast or something like that?) with a younger female pilot. I think this was in direct contraction to what was being told by the wife of the pilot who died. (good CRM/ bad CRM) Who's to say what actually happened on that flight, one thing for sure CRM (cockpit resource management) failed big time if neither of the pilots had control of the aircraft. Young pilots in small VFR operations live in fear of older pilots so don't be so quick to persecute the co-pilot.

 

In the land of VFR helicopters here's how it works: You don't report an incident because you might loose your job and if the boss sees you screwing up he will tell you " stop screwing up or your fired", there's your SMS for small VFR operators CBC. Older more experienced guys don't even like the new pilots coming up the ranks because contrary to popular belief there is no pilot shortage so a lot of these guys who could or should be mentoring less experience pilots are cutting their throats instead.

 

Non-punitive reporting is the biggest joke in the industry and we all know it. The reason SMS won't work is because we fear being labeled as trouble makers, loosing our jobs and being blacklisted. We have no one to protect us from our bosses and each other. A very sad fact. And yes the blacklist is very real, it's a bunch of experianced guys who trash a man or woman's reputation over a few beers most likely because he or she was stupid enough to stand up for themselves (most likely over a safety issue).

 

The question isn't whether or not SMS will work but how many people will die before we go back to the old system where the operators have an inspector looking over their shoulders?

The state of literacy nowadays is appalling even amongst people who have made names for themselves in our industry. To correct all errors would be an endless task but to choose to correct only a few smacks of backhandedness and the trivial. Lets keep our criticisms to the substance of their ideas not their presentation.

While one would like to think that the vehemence with which some of the (presumably) more sage posters express their views might give them credence, let's remember that yelling louder doesn't assure either correctness, or even 'winning' the argument.

 

Facts:

 

1.There ARE companies that have substantially improved their overall standards, and records, of safety with SMS;

 

Even if throwing money at the regulator was an answer, there will NEVER be enough in a democratic, free enterprise society and nor should there be, lest the weak and irresponsible be give unfair advantage;

 

Smaller operators, in general, never received oversight equivalent to that of the larger ones and never would.
