SuddenStop
while I agree is pointless to make note of minor spelling errors (lord knows I make some too), it isn't that hard to take a moment to re-read your post and fix some if not all of them. Unfortunately I am sometimes doing a post and run scenario and don't have time to correct errors. And I suffer the consequences if someone feels the need to jump on me for it. I do lose sleep over it. now that Splitty has opened the gauntlet...let him have it next time he spells something wrong. I usually only do it when I fall back to my childhood days and can't win the fight any other way.
Lunchbox
If they can't do that they should resign and let someone who gives a **** about safety take over. This is a very interesting, but perhaps very true statement. So TC is putting more responsibility on the industry, but apparently the industry itself doesn't give a **** about safety. What does that say about the industry? We need to have our hands held and be babysat? Anyone who knows the industry knows that there are aviation companies who operate on the edge and beyond of the safety rules and with no external oversight people will die unnecesarily. Human nature and greed guarantees that will occur. Agreed. Then again, the major airlines have been running on SMS for years and aren't exactly falling out of the sky, although they do have to deal with public optics far more and can't really afford to mess things up. But shoestring operators have been around way before SMS, and what was happening to them? People were still complaining about lack of TC oversight. What is ultimately the solution? And first of all, what is in fact the problem? Smaller operators running on shoestring budgets and forsaking safety? Why are they running on shoestring budgets in the first place? Cutting costs, competition, and public demand for cheap air travel? Too many pilots, low wages, unscrupulous hiring/firing practices? Should TC be an all knowing all seeing Big Brother, and how is that even possible outside of living in a dictatorship?
Grasshopper
While one would like to think that the vehemence with which some of the (presumably) more sage posters express their views might give them credence, let's remember that yelling louder doesn't assure either correctness, or even 'winning' the argument. Facts: 1.There ARE companies that have substantially improved their overall standards, and records, of safety with SMS; Even if throwing money at the regulator was an answer, there will NEVER be enough in a democratic, free enterprise society and nor should there be, lest the weak and irresponsible be give unfair advantage; Smaller operators, in general, never received oversight equivalent to that of the larger ones and never would. The operators that con themselves, and the public, were Apologies - laptop hiccuped. The operators that con themselves, and the public, were never going to act responsibly, regardless. Unless we choose to live in a truly socialist, or even totalitarian, society, economics will, unfortunately, always be at least a large element in safety. The whole SMS thing is an ICAO movement essentially. Canada or the burocracy that this is signatory to the convention will try to stay compliant with the recommendations of the SARPS . Personally I thought that Canada had a really good system in place pre SMS. Thats not to say that it cant work but I truley believe that TC must bring back that old hands on approach at the same time,.Although cost prohibitive it did save lives.. Not to mention giving more old guys a decent pension... P5
