Bell-powered
Did a search and could not find much so here it goes. We are looking into switching over to Thixosyn (thixogrease) instead of Mobil 28, and i'm trying to find information from someone who is operating with it in the bell 206 series. -What's the pros? -What's the con? Can it replace mobil 28 completely, or is there certain components or controls that doesn't work with it? I understand that bell is looking into approving it, but you can get approved to use it already, but they haven't put it in the spm yet. Thoughts, comments! lamanated
Its sticky, I haven`t seen any leaky tubes like 28. We use it on 212 blade bolts only. So we don`t use alot of it and my coworkers especially THE NEW GUY, never change tubes on the guns..Bell heads would like the runnier 28 so the bearings will be in grease when it moves forward and back on the yoke. The component guys will know what works . heliwench
I have heard that somebody somewhere is using it, but have never seen any solid proof that is actually legit to replace 28 with it. We use it on blade bolts (206) as well, works awesome! doesn't dry out like cpc so they slide right out when you go to remove them next time. It is an approved alternative to cpc for bells. And out of the msds... Potential Health Effects Ingestion Acute effects -No significant hazard. Minimal toxicity. Ingestion of large amounts may cause intestinal blockage. As long as you don't eat too much of it, its gotta be better for you than cpc, which I have heard has cadmium in it?
SuddenStop
Google worked at finding tons of info on it. Some of it smoke and mirrors possibly. Is it as awesome as they claim?? The trucking and farm industry loves it. And one testimonial I stumbled across, although was about 7 words long, came from a helicopter operator. (Last on the page http://www.maryngroup.com/support-and-info/userexperiences.html ) I'm gonna grease up my lawn tractor with it. Contact this guy and see where they're at: http://www.maryngroup.com/industry-applications/aviation.html
skidkicker
HTS are using it on a couple of test 206's for Bell. The heads should have been due for a strap change since starting the program. I would like to see what the yoke looked like. Give them a call. sven
According to Bell Helicopter Textron, they have been doing extensive testing with Thixo Grease on Bell 206 series rotorheads. During several AME workshops and Bell Helicopter Maintenance seminars, they have stated that testing is going well with virtually no marks on the yoke while using Thixo Grease. Expect to see Technical Bulletin soon which will allow you to use Thixo Grease instead if Aeroshell 22 or Mobil Grease 28. Disclaimer: I am not associated with Bell Helicopter in any way other than as an AME working on their products for a local operator. Looking forward to the improvement. Lunchbox
Thixogrease is already an approved alternative for 206 tailrotor drive splined adapters, NR/N1/N2 tach gens, and hydraulic pump drive (see MM Chap 12). We've been using it for a few years now on our aircraft, and I haven't heard of any issues. I don't know if it's going to fully replace mobil 28. Maybe just in the MRH? Yes i guess it would, probably a bit thick to use as everyday grease..
offset
I have seen an approval right from Bell on this topic. It was prompted by a request from a component guy and I saw the letter stating that Bell is in the process of the giving official OK. I have not seen it in the new revision of a manual yet but that was the just of the letter I read. We use it on Mast splines and Blade bolts on the 206 series and have had really good luck with it. works great in all conditions all year round. drkrider
I have talked with an New Zealand operator that the Thixogrease salesman out of Edmonton knew of a year or so back. They've been running the Thixosyn for a few thousand hours as a test bed for Bell and he claimed they are getting 3 overhauls out of a set of needle bearings in 206 MRHs and minimal wear on the yokes My understanding is that Bell is looking at allowing every thing to be greased with Thixosyn. I've been using the Thixogrease on the splines for a few years now and it seems to work well no complaints so far. Sean
