Quite a few years ago I read about a study done in the US that looked at the benefits and drawbacks of various headsets and helmets to flight crew. There was the expected benefits of hearing protection and crash/bump protection. But there was an additional benefit of the full coverage of a helmet - when your skull is exposed to a high noise environment with a wide spectrum of sound frequencies there was a noticeable fatigue factor over time. This was significantly reduced with a full coverage helmet.

Good point Icewind, not to mention the fact that it saves lives. I had a crash at a high rate of speed and the investigators told me that the dash would have killed me had I not been wearing a helmet.

I've been wearing one for a few years. I just got sick of wearing a ball cap with sunglasses and crappy David Clark head set on the long ferrie flights chassing fires. Much safer and MUCH more comfertable. During winter Ops drop the visor and you can work under or around the AC with no issues. I've talked to people wearing helmuts in small bush planes even to protect from the minor bumbs during off sight landings. ie gravel shore lines.

I worked for a number of years with out a helmet. About 4 years ago , I went out and purchased a helmet for the same reasons you have listed. I have found wearing it works great for slinging operations as well. As Icewind has pointed out after a long day I wasn't as fatigued as I normally was. I would highly recommend any engineer get a helmet.

I worked for an American run outfit and the Engineers were issued safety glasses that had to be worn at all times in the hangar as well as construction type helmets that were required if working above head hight.

The company next door to where I work now have to wear cycling helmets if they are on the machines.

I had a cross shift on seismic years ago that probably should been required to wear a hockey helmet.

After 14 years, I finally broke down and bought a used helmet from a pilot who was wanting to upgrade his. It was, and is a good investment. More protection plus you no longer have to share a microphone sock with the last 100 people who sneezed into the David Clark headsets in the machine.
