Whitestone
Another thing this does it to keep wages low. Just the other day i was talking with a trucker and he asked how much i made. I told him and he couldn't believe it and said that he paid more in taxes than i grossed. For all the risks we take why do we make the least amount of money of anyone in the patch? Did anyone watch the movie "Inequality For All"? Kind of explains the whole process of our dissapearing middle class. W.

Whitestone
We have the Foreign Worker Program for the same reason that most likely the clothes you are wearing are not made in Canada. There is more profit in it for the manufacturer and the seller than clothes (or pretty much anything) made in Canada. When you can pay someone pennies on the Dollar for a wage and no overtime, pension, environmental regulations to follow, etc., it's easy to see why it's done. It's not that you are getting those pants much cheaper when you buy them, it's just that they can MAKE them cheaper thus are able to make a larger profit. It's all about corporate greed, it has nothing to do with what is actually good for this country, so to all of those who shop at WalMart and buy things made off shore, you are part of the problem. (I try my best and even write long letters to Carhart, etc. giveing them #### for selling us out...) You don't want someone from the Southern Hemisphere to steal your job but you have "stolen" the job of the person who makes your Carharts, Levis, phones, cars, heavy equipment and on and on. Can you see the parallel? You say you don't have any choice but you do with how you spend your money. I know... we can't afford it, we try to stretch our ever shrinking paychecks.... it $ucks but where is it going to end? When everyone working at Tims and in every hotel is from the Philippines and every helicopter is flown by someone from down under? WE KNOW YOU CAN'T FIND WORKERS, but what you are leaving out is that you can't find workers who will work for the pittance you are offering and will take your abuse! We can make choices in what we buy and where it's made but we most always look for the best deal much like those helicopter companies that hire German, English, Auz, Irish, Kiwi, etc. pilots. We have all heard the stories about how they pad their log books and never get busted and laugh at us Canadians about how stupid we are to let them in, they fly and build their hours, go home and are on their way and our country suffers yet another blow. How do we stop this? Is it going to be when not a single Canadian is working and all the prosperity is sucked out of this country, do we just sit and take it? Large lobby groups and corporations dictate this FWP because as always in history, money makes the world go round... it's not what's good for the Country or the "masses" it's what's best for the FEW. I can't go work over in Auz but those guys are over here, popping up everywhere like mushrooms after a spring rain. And it's all because of the policies that have been written by bureaucrats and politicians at the behest of corporations in the pursuit of short term gain and greed. I was joined for breakfast a few days ago by a pilot and can you guess where he was from? The system is basically corrupt, you can take statistics and make them say pretty much what ever you want. Rather than the big lie, "We can't find anyone" why not be honest and say: " We are looking to employ someone who won't ask for time off, work over their duty day every day and NEVER have time off all summer or have the courage to stand up for themselves in any way". Fear is the friend of any industry when trying to control it's workers, make them scared and they will take the crumbs they are thrown. pilot5
Scarcity of manpower, and manned equipment will result in wages and machine rates improving, operators finding solutions to train and help the younger generation along when they can. It would also be helpful if there were tax break for companies so that training and promoting hr building would increase. Operators in tourist based markets have zero reason to require foreign workers. Similarly provincial authorities must also partner with operators to help with the endemic problem of lack of experience and assist to enable the industry. Insurance companies are still a big part of the problem and more what insurance companies impart to end users who must then tender contracts based on minimums. As long as there is one pilot with 250- 10,000 hrs who is Canadian and unemployed with a valid license,( and seeking employment) not one TWP should be issued. Perhaps we need a mechanism ( website) so that pilots can join and list credentials and availability, location etc. then the government has a resource to assess the availability of Canadian workers before issuing work permits? If someone wants to create such a website i would gladly put my name up, as i am sure others would as well. P5

pilot5
Looks like US Pilots are organized to protect their jobs….Not exactly the same situation but taking action seems to be the only to improve matters. found this on the AV Canada site. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Qj9_jt_5jHY P5

Topher
Whitestone, what's stopping you from working in Australia?
Twin Helix
You hit the nail on the head Twin Helix !!! Very well said. You keep bringing in pilots (liers or not...) from out of country with beween 100 and 3000 hours and don't create an internal shortage, things will never get better for Canadian low timers. If the supply dries up the hour requirements will come down. It's all about greed and short term gain. W. A low-time pilot who understands the business, gets the challenges and offers loyalty in exchange for a chance...wow, what an opportunity for a Heli company looking to make a move in the right direction for Canadian pilots. Feel free to PM job offers (I'm available immediately and ALMOST willing to work for gas and lodging alone)
