Yes I know these are as old as the A-Star itself but the current version of utility floats have a tendency to keep the tail rotor a little bit to clean. That is correct, we tried them once and even with very little weight in the aircraft it was impossible to land in a completely smooth pond. I'm pretty sure they were just intended to be used for things like sampling when you're hovering inches above the surface and wouldn't have time to inflate pop-outs.
