I use an i pad mini with a ram mount for the A-star and just put it on my knee like a map with a bell. I dont have wifi on mine, so i picked up a bluetooth external gps antena, i think it was 100$. disadvantage, I cant get wx unless im on wifi, advantage, no monthly data bill. when you get foreflight, if you have an iphone, you can get wx reports on your phone.

 

Foreflight is the best nav and flight planning tool i have ever seen. Get it, you will love it

So, with an iPad mini, is there a model that comes out of the box with a GPS receiver, or do they all require an add on? I was using a company issued iPad mini and used ForeFlight as well as GPSmotionX, but no add on antena. I thought it acquired satellites without an add on.

If you purchase the ipad mini that is cellular capable, its an extra $100 but it has a GPS receiver built in. I use that, without a cell plan at the moment.

So without the cell plan it works fine? And I guess you get your updates thru wifi then? Excellent idea!

Correct it works fine. Just like taking your iPhone into the bush, it has no cell reception but the gps antenna works fine.

Apple's GPS antenna is integral to the CELL antenna. So if you have one you have both. If you specifically are looking for an iPad for GPS capabilities, then you might as well buy the CELL version for the extra $100, because most of the external GPS antennas you can buy to make your WIFI only iPad work cost about that anyways. And the downside is that you will probably have to charge that new antenna (if it is blue toothed) or you have to plug it into the bottom which takes up more space.

If it's possible could someone that has very little ego, but a wealth of knowledge with the use of foreflight and I pads message me. I would like to get myself one seeing as my personal GPS died last season.

I find that I use it more as a flight planning tool than in flight navigation. Mainly because their user defined way point system sucks. I have written them requesting an easy way to mark a position with one or two presses. Something that can be done without going deep into the menu system. Otherwise the charts are good for cross countries but I don't think it replaces a Garmin with topo maps.

If you press and hold your position on the map display a menu opens up with waypoints nearby and the top option is your current location. By pressing the "more" option, you can edit said waypoint. I'm new with this system but I hope that helps.
