How Can One Upload Waypoint Files To Foreflight Or Garmin Pilot?

Recommended Posts

Recently installed ForeFlight and Garmin Pilot on my iPhone 6+.

Looking to replace my Garmin Portable with the iPhone 6+ or iPad mini for bush type of work.

Typically my clients will give me Waypoint Files (Garmin GDB or GPX, or Google Earth KML files).

I would need to upload these to either ForeFlight or Garmin Pilot.

Garmin Pilot doesn't seem to have provisions for this. Unless I missed something. App doesn't even appear in iTunes app file sharing tab (unlike ForeFlight which does).

I tried following Foreflight directions, but they don't seem to work: http://www.forefligh.../user-waypoints

After copying the CSV or KML file to Forelight App via FileSharing on iTunes and then launching Foreflight and tapping the waypoint button, it doesn't ask to import the waypoints.

Any assistance would be greatly appreciated.

Only thing I can think of is be sure you've used the correct name "user_waypoints".

Everyone I know with trouble gets the name wrong. Has to be exactly as above^ and don't type the extension.

It doesn't like tracks. They appear as waypoints.

You can only upload one file.

Hope that helps

Hey Vast,

Thank you for the update, I did actually miss the note on the webpage above: http://www.foreflight.com/support/user-waypoints

"IMPORTANT: A CSV file must be named user_waypoints.csv - similarly a KML file must be named user_waypoints.kml. If the files do not match this format and name exactly, ForeFlight Mobile cannot recognize the data in them and they will not show up inside the app."

I'll try that out and see if it works.

Update regarding Garmin Pilot iPhone/iPad App, I spoke with Garmin Aviation Support (1-866-739-5687) They confounder is a heavily requested feature but not available now unless you own a Garmin D2 Pilot watch.

Update 2:

Changing the file name to user_waypoints.csv actually managed to get it recognized by ForeFlight, but the waypoint names are all jumbled and most of them missing Lat and Longs.

Seems ForeFlight needs to invest more work into getting this feature right.

So no go for me using iPad Mini or iPhone 6+ as a replacement for Garmin 296.

Too bad.

I disagree, I love foreflight and the ipad mini. I've been using for almost 15 months for bush work. Doors off at minus 30 can be a problem but that's my only issue. I use a different app if I need a visible track since they haven't implemented that yet but it will come.

The .pdf document viewer in foreflight alone sells it but there is much more. CFS, Repeater map, flight manual, radio manuals etc all within reach with one hand much quicker to navigate if you need it. All the maps in Canada. always up to date. Much faster to enter way points manually using a touch screen then scrolling through the numbers one at a time.

It would be really irritating to go back to the old gamin stuff for me at this point.

That being said the 196 and required paper still sits in the machine somewhere in case the ipad shits the bed.
