R0T0R
Hey guys, I’m awaiting delivery of a CEP kit and the install looks to be quite simple, so the plan is to install it myself. I was hoping to reach out to you all and see if you have any advice regarding drilling into a fibreglass shell. I’ve never done that before and I’d really like to make it look good. Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Happy new year!
MikeNowak
I've installed CEPs on a few helmets and always ended up with a clean install without much effort... Any of the ugliness of the drilling site is pretty well hidden by the collars that go around the plug when you install it. Threw down some masking tape, drilled the proper size right off (no stepping up bit sizes), and if you do it without removing all of the helmet innards, be careful what is inside the shell when the bit goes through. Clean up the fibers around the hole with scissors or a razor, screw the jack in, and you're done. Mike
Heliian
Just be careful, drilling into your helmet may render it unserviceable, check with the manufacturer for a suitable location. Also, using the proper drill bits is important to step up to a round hole. Once drilled and deburred, seal the newly exposed edge with epoxy to prevent moisture damage and delamination. R0T0R
Thanks Helian and Mike for the insight. I finished the install the other day and it went very well.
R0T0R
Hey guys, I’m going to keep this thread going with another question here... A few years ago I was on a fire with a guy that showed me a modification he had made to his cep kit where he had a more rugged SMB connector and wire built. I’m interested in the same modification so that it can stand up to the rigours of deep cold. Can anyone point me in the right direction in the Calgary area? Heliian
How good are your electrical skills? https://www.newark.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/Search?categoryId=800000006561&pageSize=25&catalogId=15003&langId=-1&sf=422&st=sma&storeId=10194 6 hours ago, R0T0R said: Hey guys, I’m going to keep this thread going with another question here... R0T0R
My electrical skills are(imha) above average, but I would prefer to have more to go on that that to do the job in a way that would be sustainable over a long term. If you have resources that demonstrate the process with a few more steps and with all the necessary components, I’d certainly give it a fair try.
