I find Foreflight is such a good tool. The downside to it is bush flying, fires for example. Marking user waypoints is a process. If they added a quick mark button or simplified the user waypoint menu it would be perfect.

Yes, I agree, ForeFlight is the way to go.
Entering waypoint is super easy:

  • Just zoom in for max accuracy, on the current location marker
  • Tap and hold on it
  • Tap the "More" next to the Location (on the top of the  popup)
  • Tap "Save"
  • Enter waypoint name, or leave the default if you don't want to type a name.
  • Tap "Save"

I have also used Gaia GPS, which can store Natural Resource Canada topographical maps for offline use, and it works very well for easily adding waypoints.

6 steps for what used to be one is going backwards IMO.  I want a man overboard button like a marine GPS.

What you're saying is not entirely accurate since if you wanted to give the waypoint a recognisable name, you had to tap the "up" and "down" buttons many times to cycle through the alphabet to get the characters you wanted, at least in the 296, 396, 496, this was always very frustrating to say the least.

robottxt, see below how easy it is to add a waypoint.

I used to have a 296, then Garmin stopped supporting it, so I upgrade to 695, then Garmin decided to stop supporting that, so that's when I decided to ditch the Garmin eco system. Won't be long before 796 won't be supported any more.

iPad running ForeFlight is a much better solution and much more versatile, as it can do so much more than just a moving map.
