Northwall vs MSA Gallet helmets

Recommended Posts

Hello everyone,

I know this topic has been discussed a bit in the past, but with the posts being a few years old, I was wondering if more people have had a chance to try the Northwall helmet and what their thoughts were on comfort and sizing when compared to the Gallet. Going to be dropping a fair amount of change for a helmet in the near future and want to try and make the most informed decision. For reference my head sizing is 56 cm so I'm right on the edge of the charts between the two sizes, so if anyone also has any experience with sizing up/ down that would be much appreciated as well 🤣

I've heard a few good reviews about the Northwall, but one thing to consider is if you have any plans to work south of the border, the USFS require you to have a helmet that is approved by the DOI, and I couldn't find Northwall on the list here:

https://www.doi.gov/aviation/safety/helmet

My head is around 56cm as well and I wear a large Gallet LH250 and it fits great. I have the grey inner visor, it's handy if you want to remove the external visor and cover to reduce weight/size to get in and out of the bubble easier/more comfortable.

I bought from Merit down in the USA, they've been pretty helpful over the years when I've needed stuff.

Good luck with your purchase.

I've worn the northwall for over 500+ hours now and I find it outperforms the Gallet in a few areas. I have a Bose installed it in and the BOA system allows me to synch it so it forms a seal tight fit over my ears and the ANR is way better for it. The engineering of it also feels way lighter and better balanced on my head. I used to get neck pain with the Gallet, especially longlining in the Astar, but none with the northwall after multiple snowmen in a row. The double internal visor system is also less bulky than the double system in the Gallet.
