Since the 2300 lb load was referred to as a "drill piece" then chances are it doesn't have to be moved very far. If that is the case, and you have a light B2, this can be safely and legally done with the proposed aircraft. If there are multiple loads around this weight and you need to fly them any distance a 204 would be a better option for the client.

 

A good rule of thumb with a B2 is that if you are torque limited (which you definitely should be at <1000' combined with cool temps) you can hover out of ground effect at max-gross-external... which as our esteemed colleague JL pointed out is 5512 lbs... so as long as the total weight of ship, pilot, fuel, gear and load add up to no more than 5512 you're in business...

he asked if a "2300 lb. drill piece sound like a workable load? below 1000 feet and cool temps" was possible i said it was... and it is providing you don't have far to go and your b2 is on the light side of things.... add in a breeze and it will walk away with it without blowing your limits... except your max external and then its only a little bit of fuel to spare!

So you are saying that its okay to exceed your max external gross weight, but just by a bit?

 

I don't think I want to strap on any helicopter you have been flying sir.

 

It's never the individual who pulls the chit out of the helicopter who ends up paying a price for it. It's normally the next poor sap who straps it on that runs into trouble.

 

Fly a legal load. If it's too heavy (even just a bit) you need a bigger helicopter. Period.

If as someone else said, the wieghts fall within limits, then what's the problem?

 

If you're fueling overgross to move the thing any distance, then get a bigger machine, if not, why wouldn't you use the B2? That's what it's desinged to do. How about we start by charging decent rates for said machine?

Interesting thread, as posted earlier, the B2 will/may just do that lift! It is right on the edge of its performance with no spare anything!

 

We have installed the aerodyne system which tracks and records everything! Even when you fart! Well almost everything! This keeps from one person being able to move this item, and another not, because the 'numbers are recorded!' Its a great system so that when you get to any transient number, the pilot hears a 'beeping' sound in their headset, the faster the beep the closer you are to the limit, so no more searching for that over torque or overtemp, keep your eyes on the job in hand and only listen!

Interesting use of the system... What happens when you reach your limit? Do you get a solid tone as if your A/C just flatlined? As I recall the beeping just keeps going even if you exceed your limits. So if you just listen rather than look, you will exceed, no?

We have a digital torque gage in all our B2s on the floor next to the floor window for vertical refrence when moving drills and stuff, it has 2 flags, one that tells you you are aproaching torque limits, and another one that comes out if you overtorqued the machine, even if it is only by one second.....and that flag stays there untill the chief engineer gives the engineer in charge the code to reset it..., so if you overtorqued your B2 you are in deep isht......that makes the pilot think twice before pushing the limits of the machine, and maintenance costs to the minimum
