Frequent Flyer
Personally I have had 3 loads depart the helicopter. All were 100% mechanical failures. Two were electrical faults ( AStar) and one hook rigged incorrectly in the hanger. (212). All unable to be seen on a walk around and all a long way from me " Pushing the button." Bugman
I remember the incident but not the details. Did the concrete hit the cable car or hit the cable causing the cars to jump off the line? I thought it was the latter. If so, was the pilot picking up the load where he had to cross the line to get to the drop point? Did the mtn. operator offer to close the line down while the work took place? If not why not? Were there other ways to complete the work without crossing the line? What was done by the construction company to mimize risks to all in the area? There is way too little information for me to pass judgement and throw stones at the pilot. He may be the problem or he may have been caught by the whole swiss cheese thing. Might be he should have just walked away at the beginning. And risked losing his job (and house and retirement and ...). Hard to sit here and have a strong opinion. It begs for one to have those same opinions tossed back at one. I feel sad for all involved. And I think of all the times in Canada where one might take the advice of above (do not fly over roads, cars, houses, people etc. - which is proper advice) and get thrown off the job for not being production oriented. (Though they would put in another way of course!) Way too easy to say after the fact it should have been done "this way". Hopefully it never happens to any of us. Fenestron
whether John is having communication/interference problems or not, it doesn't change the outcome of the situation. the pilot....in control of the aircraft, flew over a cable car, lost his load, either caused by him or something else, and people died. There is nothing more to be said, he put himself, the cargo, and those people in that situation, him only, no one else, and he is paying for it.
