Wreckage but no occupants...

Divers joined the search on Tuesday for a pilot and passenger who were on a helicopter that crashed in northern Saskatchewan Sunday night.

The crash happened at Bernick Lake, about 645 kilometres north of Saskatoon and about 16 kilometres south of the Cigar Lake uranium mine.

The pilot worked for the company that owned the helicopter while the passenger, from Ontario, was with the firm that chartered it.

Concerns were raised Sunday when the pair were four hours late getting back to Points North Landing.

The next day, Department of National Defence searchers in a Hercules aircraft, float plane, and helicopters were scanning the bush and lakes hoping to find survivors.

Instead, they spotted debris from the A-Star 350 helicopter scattered on the water and at the shore's edge RCMP divers were getting ready to go into the lake Tuesday.

Meanwhile, the Transportation Safety Board will begin its investigation to find out why the helicopter went down.

Suspected wreckage from helicopter found

Two people still missing

Star Phoenix

Published: Tuesday, July 03, 2007

Wreckage has been found and two people are missing after a suspected helicopter crash on Sunday.

Officials suspect the helicopter crashed into a lake in a remote area of northern Saskatchewan. RCMP say staff at Points North Landing reported the chopper missing at 11:30 p.m. Sunday when it was four hours overdue in returning.

A Winnipeg-based search and rescue Hercules aircraft took part in the search, Canadian Forces Maj. Gerry Favre said from the National Rescue Co-ordination Centre in Ottawa.

Favre said a float plane and a military helicopter from Cold Lake, Alta., attended the scene in a remote wooded area near Reindeer Lake.

RCMP say Canadian Department of National Defence planes located some debris believed to be from the helicopter Monday morning in and around Bernick Lake, which is about 16 kilometres south of the Cigar Lake mine in northeastern Saskatchewan. RCMP spokesperson Heather Russell said searchers have not found the plane's fuselage.

Favre would not identify the owner of the missing helicopter, but said it is a small helicopter and is privately owned.

The RCMP underwater recovery dive team will travel to the area today to assist with the search in Bernick Lake.

The area is not accessible from the ground, and no one lives in the area where debris was found, according to Favre.

The Transportation Safety Board will also investigate the incident.
