S64E Model (Skycrane) Max Gross = 42,000 lbs. Hook Limit = 20,000 lbs. Empty wt = 20,000 lbs (approx).......add 1 hrs fuel = 5000 lbs grapple wt. = 3,000 lbs, couple of fat pilots = 500lbs

 In terms of limits, lifting its own wieght is out of the question

I've flown a few 407's and have yet to fly one that would come anywhere near lifting 2900 + Lbs.The average empty weight of a 407.... <_<

I have herd of one flying away with 3000 on the hook (by accident, until the pilot noticed the weight)

But, yea, I agree, they even struggle to do what the book says they can!

AS350B3- Empty: 2707 lbs, max gross with external load: 6172 lbs.

(As per Eurocopter AS 350B3 techincal data sheet)

http://www.eurocopterusa.com/Product/as350/as350.asp

Maybee a bare B3 will weight 2700 lbs ours weight in closer to 2900lbs and it will lift its full ext gross weight of 6173 (hook rated for 3000 lbs) at sea level ISA with some power reserve...impressive! Don't know how well it maintains performance at altitude. We just got it...
