EC-130
The langing gear on these choppers looks flimsy, is that the case? Would they survive being slammed onto a pitching oilrig pad in bad weather? I have always wondered this as their landing look really weak. S-92 gear looks just a tiny bit stronger... http://www.airliners.net/open.file?id=1022...d=&next_id=
Guest Jerry
I don't know about the 92, but you can smack the 76 on with a goodly thump - just don't be going sideways at all. I expect the 92 is pretty tough too.
dimit
Hey Jerry, I'm a bush 'n skids guy, don't know wheeled gear... Is the 76 gear weak laterally or is rollover the problem? Season's best, DM
Guest Jerry
DM It's built Sikorsky tough (although not as tough as the old designs), but like most helicopters (skids or wheels) it's probably not a good idea to touch down going sideways too much. Can't comment on the 92 or 139.
Reddog
I've been told that the Super Puma's landing gear is good for a 36G smack. Although with the high C of M of the Puma you don't want to have any side motion to your abrupt arrival.
That's not good
Have you seen a R-22 landing gear!?!?!?!? two words... F#@k me! Super Puma can take 1500' pr/min rate of descent no problem, 92 oleo's are built to self destruct to absorb energy.
sharkbait
Drop the S-92 in at 10 G + and the fire extinguishers will activate. ( Fuel Valves close - extinguishers discharge into the 1 and 2 engine plus the APU ) giving positive indication of a negative event. There are also break away fittings on the fuel lines if required. Oleos will self destruct to absorb impact forces. It will all be recorded on the maintainance computer to provide easy access to data to fill out the incident report. ELT should start screaming to inform the world that "The off lights are on."

I don't know the actual numbers, but I've been told the French Military have far more rollover-while-taxiing accidents in the Pumas than all other Puma accidents combined. Is that another poke at the French like the old ad: "French battle rifles for sale. Never fired, only dropped once."
