Maintenance Positions

So firing someone is the only solution when someone makes a mistake? What happened to CRM and Human Factors? One of the best things to happen to the industry in the last 15 years or so, IMO, is that companies and Transport realize that firing someone doesn't fix the problem (this is regardless of SMS).

I've been reading all this quabble over the SMS system with much interest. And can clearly see that there are major differences in the point of views from ALL.

As for "small" operators, I don't see a difference in how implementation of SMS into "small"operastoins will be different then the implementation of "large'operations, EXCEPT the size of the company. That is to say, as Skully suggested (implied) the "small"operator has a tendency to disemminate the information in a different manner then that of a large operation.

Yes, there will be a more öpen"disclosure of who/whom was involved in the incident, however, having said that, from my perspective this is NOT necessarily a bad thing. Small operations have ( from my experience) a more closer working relationship, not only within the maintenance function of the company but within the operational side as well. Further more, the operations side and the maintenance side works more closely together, then those of a large operator. Thusly, there are fewer "secrets"

From my vantage point this can be a good thing OR a bad thing depending upon the stance of the owner/s, managers of the operation.

The whole point of SMS is not to point fingers and throw people out the door. The whole point of SMS, as I see it is to identify the ROOT cause of a problem and rectify it BEFORE it becomes a major "reportable"incident or accident!

The main point is NOT to point fingers at an individual and brow beat nor belittle the individual. The point of SMS is to cure the "problem"or identify why the specific problem and/or problem ocurred in the first place, and to take tangable steps to eliminate the possibility that a problem ocurrs.

And the root cause of a problem can be something as simple as re-writing a manual and/or procedure in clearer language, identifing more specific training, whether it's operational training, SMS training. company procedural training etc. etc.

I am not necessarily accepting of a bunch of regulations and paperwork that is irrelevant to the operations and the profitabiliy of a company! I want to make that very clear! I AM in favour of ANY policy wherein a company, individual can not only maintain their profitablity but also ensure that the customers and especially the drivers bring that machine/s back home safely, in one piece.

And from my rambling of the proposed SMS system over the past years, this is the prime point of SMS. Do I like the system as it is presently presented?? Nope! but I do have to agree with those who, thus far, presented their individual point of views. The ONLY way that SMS will work for small operators and/or large operators is by the industry itself becoming ACTIVELY involved and steering the SMS system in a direction which meets the dictates of the regulators while allowing the industry to operate in a safe, clean and profitable manner.

We have a choice here, whether folks want it or not. We can implement SMS as dictated by TCCA OR we can actively become involved in the management of SMS by contributing to the implementation of the 'system'. That means getting in there, getting dirty, DISCUSSING the merits or disadvantages of the system and changing things so that it works for all operations and personnel, regardless of the size of the company.

It's going to happen anyways folks!! Might as well ensure that it happens in a manner that is acceptable to us all!

Having stated that, there WILL be a group of nay sayers that will sqwak about the SMS system regardless of what is done or what is not done. The struggle here lies with striking an acceptable balance.

Personally, I don't see TCCA addressing anybody's interest but their own. And I HAVE seen some of the M&M Inspectors TCCA currently have in their employ. NOT ALL, but a large percent of these inspectors scare the livin Be-Jasus outa me. Not from what they know, but rather by what they don't know!

I'd MUCH, rather have the industry involved in steering the SMS system then to see TCCA driving it!

I WILL support any entity that provides reliable, correct and factual information to the indusrty regardless of whether I "like'a specific individual or not! The individual characteristics of any individual be damned. The industry as a whole is GREATER then that of the one! As long as we''re all working towards A COMMON, VIABLE goal, I don't care if the individual is curt, polite or nice!! After all, I've been dealing with drivers in this industry for over 33 years!! If I can put up with that, I can put up with anything!!

Get on board and contribute, or stay off and put up with the consequences. Whatever turns ya crank!

So here's the question. If Hepac doesn't get involved, Who does??
