The original 500 had four blades and if I remember correctly Hughes said in an emergency they could fly on two blades.

 

John Schultz was a Hughes sales person at one time, he might know for sure.

 

Another person is Antoine Lebrun or Tony Brown, Elvis could ask him.

I have heard the rumor but always thought it was a "helicopter myth" never talked to anyone who had seen it done, much less attempted it. It was once discussed as a way to get a 500 out of a hole when someone threw a tool into the rotor system and whacked a blade. It was an option not discussed for long! I recall they borrowed 2 opposite blades from another company's machine to get the machine the short distance home.

 

I think this thread should get the prize for greatest drift off topic.
