Skidz
I don't know if I read this right but my understanding is the pilot held a hover in a R44 while untrained personal literally scrambled up the rope into the machine all under, what I consider extreme duress! He didn't crash. If he is private someone should pay for the rest of his commercial license....If he already holds a commercial license he is probably due a few endorsements and optimum employment opportunities. Good on ya buddy! Actually, they had him land on the roof of the prison, at which point the hijackers got out and hung a rope over the edge of the roof. From the pictures, it would seem they had tied the rope to the crossbar between the front and back seats and hung it out the back door (can you say dynamic rollover ?!!). One of the inmates fell back into the yard and was able to wrap the rope around his leg. When the pilot (23 year old low-timer building his hours flying tourists) pulled pitch, the two inmates were on the end of the rope, one of them hanging from one foot, while the two hijackers were on board. They flew a couple of miles away from the prison and landed in a field where the inmates boarded the helicopter and then they took off again. The two dopes on the rope must have gotten pretty cold hands. It was -15 that morning...
Daz
What Zazu said... good on the pilot for keeping his head together! My best wishes for a speedy 'return to normal' for him. When the pilot (23 year old low-timer building his hours flying tourists) pulled pitch, the two inmates were on the end of the rope, one of them hanging from one foot, while the two hijackers were on board. So, does that count as longline experience?
