The $1.7 billion goes to Lockheed Martin as the prime contractor, which is part of the total $57 billion package that will be shared by more than 200 suppliers in 41 states, including Agusta Westland and Bell Helicopter Textron, General Electric, ITT, Northrop Grumman, Kaman Aerospace and Palomar Products. I'll try to verify (because I really don't like the idea that I could be going deaf!)... :D

Old news folks and old "gripes". Take a look at what the USCG has been operating for years and there was the same "kerfuffle" over that too. The French bitched at the Americans for going into Iraq and still do......and at the same time signed a 10 year contract to supply the USMC with ALL their battlefield rations....and that's whose feeding the Marines in Iraq now when they are in the field. They beat out an El Paso company to get that contract on top of it. All this while the "hoopla" was going on about changing the name of "French Fries" and/or banning them in some places and taking French wine off some menus nationwide. It's the old "under which one of the three walnut shells are we hiding the pea". Canada plays the same games too.....like the statement of Jean Chretin....."Canada is not supplying spare parts for any a/c, nor any other items that could be used for war, to Saddam Hussein during this UN embargo".:lol:

During the press conference it was stated that 2/3 of the aicraft ( I am sure he actually meant contract value ) was US content . The fuselage will be built in Yeovil the main gearbox in Italy and the main blades . That leaves most of the development , the avionics ,mission systems and engines as US content. about 23 M USD for each aircraft will go to AW. I wonder who will be set up for R and O of the dynamic components ? typically they set to TBO for the presidential fleet at half the normal value . Do you think they would be sending components back to Europe for overhaul ?.

Also of note is the it is a cost plus contract which means the 1.7 billion is just he starting point  , almost unheard of for a cost plus contract to come in under budget.

Many defense contracts involving new aircraft are cost plus because of changes and additions that are expected during the manufacturing phase.

It was awarded to the very best aircraft for the task. No "banana" deal in here.

Victory for the Anglo-Italian design is expected to help Lockheed's bids for up to $6bn in upcoming defence contracts.

A US Air Force contract for up to 194 top-of-the-range helicopters is expected to be negotiated in 2006.

And the US Coast Guard and Department of Homeland Security are reported to be searching for a supplier for about 200 helicopters.
