Is a helmet mandatory for fire fighting?

Recommended Posts

A pilot wearing a helmet is not safe....the pilot is just wearing safety equipment.   Equipment that will ONLY be needed if the pilot has an accident.

Safety comes from: Training, attitude, skill, knowledge and experience.

And when it comes to experience, the main thing you have to learn is;  don't let people tell you what to do.

That is a really dumb attitude, and a poor job of trying to justify not wanting to do a thing because you just don't want to.

I wouldn't say totally dumb... If someone tells you to do something that you know or feel is not safe for you, then exercise your right to refuse...

That wasn't really his point and you know it....clients have been driving standards for years and overall (bar a few extreme examples), in a pretty positive way. Client standards and Insurance underwriters have done more to advance commercial aviation safety than Transport Canada has by orders of magnitude.

Have you ever wondered why the fixed wing fire fighting pilots get better pay, better rotations, better accommodations, better benefits?  It is definitely Not because the customer wanted better conditions for them....it is because they are not weak!  They negotiate, they do not just do what they are told.   Yes they wear helmets...because they negotiated to wear helmets. Helicopter Pilots in Canada have Never negotiated anything....they just do what they are told.
