How about registered commercial helicopter total from 2000, 2008, 2016? There is no way to determine commercial helicopters registered in the archive that I can see however here are the numbers from those years in total machines at year end. Summary of the Canadian Civil Aircraft Register - December 2000 Helicopters National Total 1753 https://wwwapps.tc.gc.ca/Saf-Sec-Sur/2/CCARCS-RIACC/SmARgnRes.aspx?ym=200012&rfr=SmYA.aspx Summary of the Canadian Civil Aircraft Register - December 2008 Helicopters National Total 2504 https://wwwapps.tc.gc.ca/Saf-Sec-Sur/2/CCARCS-RIACC/SmARgnRes.aspx?ym=200812&rfr=SmYA.aspx Summary of the Canadian Civil Aircraft Register - December 2016 Helicopters National Total 2836 https://wwwapps.tc.gc.ca/Saf-Sec-Sur/2/CCARCS-RIACC/SmARgnRes.aspx?ym=201612&rfr=SmYA.aspx
Icewind
After looking at the CCAR - National Year-End Summaries table that shows 3,000 registered helicopters in Canada for 2023, I became curious. https://wwwapps.tc.gc.ca/Saf-Sec-Sur/2/CCARCS-RIACC/SmYACat.aspx When I did detailed queries here = https://wwwapps.tc.gc.ca/saf-sec-sur/2/ccarcs-riacc/RchAvc.aspx I couldn’t account for 3,000 active helicopters. I got this: June 26, 2024 query - Commercial Private State Total Advanced Ultralight 0 0 0 0 Basic Ultralight 0 0 0 0 CAR 507.03 Special Certificate of Airworthiness - Limited 11 2 0 13 CAR Standard 507.02, 507.03 Type Certificate 878 851 57 1786 CAR Standard 507.03 (5) (03) - Ex-military Aircraft 2 7 0 9 CAR Standard 507.03 (5)(c) 0 1 0 1 CAR Standard 507.03 (5)(a) Aircraft held a flight Permit 0 0 0 0 CAR Standard 507.03(6) Owner maintenance Aircraft 0 0 0 0 CAR Standard 507.04 (2) Experimental 2 3 5 10 CAR Standard 507.04 (3) Specific Purpose 0 0 0 0 CAR Standard - Amateur Built 0 120 0 120 TOTAL 893 984 62 1939 So, I downloaded the complete CCAR database that contained registration details on over 34,000 Canadian aircraft. https://wwwapps.tc.gc.ca/Saf-Sec-Sur/2/CCARCS-RIACC/DDZip.aspx The latest version of that complete database that is publicly available is 2020. It contains information on a total of 2,678 Canadian helicopters. The National Year-End Summaries table shows 2,834 helicopters for 2020. I don’t know why there is a difference, but using TC databases is challenging - what date was the data actually compiled? what is included? what is screened out? etc. A close look at the complete 2020 CCAR database reveals that it includes 118 homebuilts, 10 experimental and 166 cancelled registrations. The remaining include, 862 that are private and 57 that are state (govt.) owned. This leaves 1,621 commercially operated aircraft. This included: · 20 with a Type Certificate & a Special Certificate of Airworthiness, · 2 operated under 507.03 (5)(b) - Ex-military Aircraft with no C of A, · 11 operated under a 507.03 Special Certificate of Airworthiness – Limited with no C of A. We are left with 1,463 commercial helicopters operating with a valid Type Certificate and Certificates of Airworthiness. (7 are shown as being operated outside of Canada.) I got this: They don’t have to be active to be accounted for. There are several airframes sitting or being rebuilt. I think the entire total stops at import and export numbers. There are several that have been parted out and or de facto, decommissioned (shelved) in the past few years as well. Currently there are 914 Turboshaft and 578 Piston Helicopters CAR Standard 507.02, 507.03 - Type Certificate (1492 Total). 62 state registered helicopters The registered commercial helicopter total is 877 The registered private helicopter total is 894 These are the aircraft that are “active” anything else will be part of inventory by serial number which has to be reported to TC as deactivated and or destroyed.
