Do you wear the helmet when you are in the maintenance role or only as a pilot?

If its a quick flight or if I've got to meet the machine somewhere it usually gets left behind as its just another thing to lug around. Its nice to have the visor for those sunny days! If I was traveling with an aircraft I would for sure, for both safety and comfort. I've got a cep's (communication ear plugs) installed on mine, which are custom molded earbuds that tie into the comm's. It really cuts down on the noise and fatigue for the longhauls.

I completly understand the "just another thing to lug around concept" as that was one of the biggest things that ever prevented me from getting one. Although it sure would have been nice to have when I was chasing fires and such. As you said it would have helped reduce fatigue on those long ferry flights. It still is an idea that I am kicking around though and was just curious to see if helmets are becoming more common amongst engineers.

I had a brand new SPH-5 given to me and thats when the moral issues started. I wore it on ferry flights and in the States because it is a Forest Service reguirment but it was always bugging me that I would look like an idiot if, heavan forbid, I was in an accident while I was not wearing it and would have to explain to St. Peter why!!
