What's with the 429's hoola hoop tail rotor guard? I can see this thing cracking and taking a few things with it as it departs the helicopter. Is this another beancounter mandated design?

 

They agonized over that thing for literally years. They could never come up with anything better. Everyone complained that the TR was too low, and because it's a double TR, it stacks up pretty tall. There really wasn't much choice. Especially when it has the clamshell doors.......

 

(I may not know much about B214's, but I DO know the 429)

 

And according to the news at Heli-expo, certification has slid once again until May.

 

I wonder how tightly Neil is strapped to the rocket sled.....

When it comes to the 429 I only know what I read.

 

According to this old news letter the tail rotor guard is optional.

I have seen a picture of the guard but don't recall where. The guard does not seem to appear in the main brochure and website pictures.

I think it goes without saying that one should be wary of self appointed experts.
