The 107 max hook weight is 11 000 lbs. On average I think they shoot for 8 - 9K for a turn. Never heard of larch being logged on the west coast. Hemlock, Balsam, Fir and Cedar are the species of choice. The riggers (guys on the ground) estimate the volume of the wood in m3, then estimate approx 2000 lbs/m3 for the weight. In a wet environment sometimes Cedar can be like lead. It's amazing the riggers can be as acurate as they are with the weights.

I've heard the 120K/year salary figure kicked around for the logging pilots at helifor, but it will depend on the type of year they've had obviously.

Apparently, almost everyone at Helifor came up the same way. 500 time, co-jo on the 107 until a captain slot became available then over to the left seat loggin. It doesn't seem like that much of a jump as everyone's done it.

The allure of float camps can wear thin sometimes when you're fogged in for 3 days straight or waiting for parts i'll tell ya. When everythings is going well it's pretty gravey though. Best camp food going, those loggers tend to whine a bit, so ya got to keep em happy!

500 in 200ft trees in the fog and rain with 3 riggers is better then the ol chevy 2. At least you have a little more jam

Hear hear to heli-logging, best flying job there is, in my opinion that is.
