Hey, Deuce. I'm sorry to hear about your recent dx and hope it is not career-ending. That is to say don't let the bugger do it to you!

I have osteoarthristis in both knees from old sports injuries. I know knees aren't hips, but they're both weight-bearing joints. Sometimes the pain is excruciating and will only go away if I stay in bed a day or two and not walk (pffft...who has time for that?).

I do take Glucosamine Chondroitin daily. It seems to improve mobility and relieve pain. I've also read that there is evidence that chondroitin sulfate/glucosamine can slow down the progression of degenerative arthritis; it's the only reason I keep takin' 'em.

I haven't been brave enough (and the pain hasn't been extreme enough yet...I should knock on wood when I say that ) to try the controversial RX drugs Celebrex or Vioxx yet.

But I did hear recently about a topical pain-relief ointment called Zeel that supposedly brings mild to moderate relief for degenerative arthritis. I intend to get some before the next wicked flair up. You can read about it here:

http://arthritis-alternative.com/detail/Zeel%20Ointment.cfm

A good friend has tried to convince me to consider Cortisone injections, which supposedly can last for a few days (<_< cripes...is that all?!) to more than six months. Needlephobe here hasn't been brave enough for that either. But something to consider, perhaps.

I've been told that over time, I will be a good candidate for knee surgery. BUT before I go that route, I'll try the traditional Chinese medicine and/or accupuncture these guys talk about. Atleast those are teeny, tiny needles! :D

I wish you well, Deuce! :)

Thanks TQN. Good info. I think I'll just get the **** on with it. Acupuncture is certainly worth a try. I'm taking the condratine glucosamine as well. Not sure if I notice anything but choking down those horse pills every day is a challenge in itself.

hey deuce,

sorry to hear u have it too, but don't worry, i am working thru it and looking forward to flying again soon. i have recently had a full hip replacement and it feels great, 14 years with a bad hip, makes a guy feel like 'why didn't i get it fixed it sooner' although i had my reasons to put it off. the pain is gone immediately which is such a relief, i know what u'r going thru. there is nothing wrong with me going back to work either so i don't see why it would be any different for you. best of luck to you

Deuce -------funny you bring this subject up because I've had the problem in my spine since the late 60's. It was brought-on by a crash one time courtesy of Ho Chi Minh.

Mine's the back and yours is the hip joints. You have it in the worst place possible and the odds are that what works for me probably won't work for you. My spine keeps me straight.......it doesn't carry my complete weight on two ball sockets like your hips. I can lift and rest one leg on something or bend over to get the same temporary relief. Neither of those two will do "diddley" for you.

I got a list of "verboten" drugs that I couldn't take from my MoT Doctor. That made the list of ones that I could take very small. I tried all those and combinations thereof and all to no avail. Then it was the accupuncture with some relief and then Herbal Medicines for some more relief yet. In actual fact, it was a combination of the two that got me the relief I wanted. Glenlivet Single Malt Scotch was also a quick pain reliever and I didn't worry about that either because we all know that drunks can fall down two flights of stairs, not break a bone, get up and pour another drink  .

As of January of this year I received a "horse needle" of steroyds into my coccyx (tail-bone) and the relief has been wondeful. It may last for 3 months or 10 years....... and again, nobody knows. The shot like I had is NOT an option for the hips according to my Specialist that did it. Again, you got it in a ******* area......but there is relief. Like everyone else, you're just going to have to experiment until you find the thing or combionation of things that does the job. My wife uses CELEBREX under prescription for her one ankle to relieve the pain and it does a great job and is fast working, but for the likes of you and me it's a "no, no". Oh and it won't be cheap either, no matter what you do..........even my Single Malt is $35 now.

PM you later with what works (ed) for me.

They're not all "horse pills," silly. It just depends on the brand. And you should know that the quality of the brand makes a big difference. In addition, it unfortunately takes time for the dynamic duo of glucosamine and chondroitin to build up in your system sufficiently enough to where you notice a distinct difference. It took me about 3 months of pill-poppin' before I noticed less pain. It seemed like a futile ritual to be certain, and then suddenly, voilà...somethin' sure felt different. If you stop taking them and then start again, you've lost that time and it will have to build up in your system again (kind of has you by the proverbial b*lls in that respect).

It's also helpful to know what glucosamine and chondroitin are and what they do for you. Check here:

Boy, ain't we just the bunch of physicians. Ahahahaha! Anyhoo, hang in there. And like Cap said, you'll have to discover the combo that works best for you over time and as the arthritis changes.

Hmmm- Lets see-bills? uh-bulls? bells? Ah-Ha, now I get it!!

TQN, you don't have any of those!!

Seriously, I feel for you folks with your aches and pains. I'm hitting the "big 65" at the end of the month and am surprised I haven't had more problems, other than stage 2 Melanoma three years ago which surgury and radiation seems to have taken care of for now. However, I see what I have to look forward to, as I seem to be getting more aches every day, especially the knees. Hurts like h-ll to walk some days. Any suggestions??
