All speculation and conjecture aside...the fact remains that someone dropped the ball! Of course those people should not have been where they were with what they had with them...but they were. They made several attempts (allegedly) to signal the passing aircraft with the international sign for help and although noted...an immediate rescue/search was not commenced.

Given the proximity to the ski area and the possibility of skiers going out of bounds unprepared, the likelyhood that it was a real emergency when first reported should have been obvious or at least considered legit. Some sort of an investigation should have occured at the earliest opportunity.

A very sad tragedy indeed.

Bar-c. As reported the said skiers had checked out of their hotel room, didn't tell anyone where they were going, were not dressed properly for backcountry skiing and only had 2 granola bars.

Stupid pilots should be hung don't ya think.

Perhaps this will close this gawd awful thread down: It was reported today in the Calgary Herald that it was reported in error that a pilot saw the SOS from the air. It stated that the SOS was not visible from the air, but was spotted on the ground by a guide. Apparently three SOS's were found on the ground and reported to the RCMP b y ground personnel.

The RCMP are giving a press conference this morning. Perhaps some facts will be aired. Also a RUMOUR circulating is that the wife did not die of hypothermia...

Autopsy reports are also supposed to be discussed at the PC. Hopefully it will be live without "filtering".

Lessson learned = Never, NEVER, NEVER trust a news article that has the word helicopter in it.

Wait for the facts from knowedgable professionals with "first-hand" information and even then be ready for serious omissions or errors.

Believe half of what you see, less of what you hear and nothing that you read in a newspaper.........
