Yes someone certainly dropped the ball and people need to be more prepared to face mother nature but of everyone that you could blame, SAR should not be among them. BC volunteer ground SAR just can't go out and search without a request from the "SAR Commander" (usually the RCMP) and a Task Number from the Rescue Coordination Center in Victoria. After the chain of command has been followed and the SAR pagers go off, a very enthusiastic and well trained group will assemble to practice their craft. To do so without proper authority would be very irresponsible, opening themselves up to a lawsuit and no Workers Compensation coverage to boot. You can't just go to the phone book and call them yourself but hundreds of trained volunteers are only a phone call away, as long as you follow proper procedure.

L-3,

Just to update you, we have just formed a SAR group out here in the last year or so. We have one hour of heli search time that can be authorized by the local SAR Commander, you don't need to go to the area supervisor unless for a request to go longer, then it is RCMP etc.

Maybe next time a person could use this time for a scout.

No blame put on anyone- we have also been in the spotlight here for something that we have had no control over. It isn't a nice feeling- especially in a small community like where most of us heli guys live.
